Character and Leadership Academy, InnoTrek and FutuReady Asia Staff Graduate from Viristar Safety Course
Viristar recently completed a multi-month training project with a family of outdoor and experiential education companies in Singapore: Character and Leadership Academy, InnoTrek, and FutuReady Asia. These organizations provide outdoor adventures, team-building and youth development programs for a wide variety of clients across the country.
A number of the participants also hold senior leadership positions with the Outdoor Learning & Adventure Education Association in Singapore, an organization representing outdoor education providers in that country, and establishing industry standards for the outdoor adventure education sector in Singapore.
Fifteen staff from all three interlinked companies completed a closed-enrollment custom version of Viristar’s Risk Management for Outdoor Programs training, running April through June, and focusing on risk management issues in the Singaporean outdoor education context.
The course included Viristar’s standard content on risk management, including a theoretical model of incident causation, best practices for conducting outdoor activities, legal considerations, and emergency response.
Course participants created safety videos as part of a role-playing activity during class.
The course also focused on issues specific to the Singapore outdoor education context, including an extensive discussion on risk assessment spreadsheets and how they can be most useful, fostering a proactive approach rather than a check-the-box style of conformance, and follow-up to a tragic safety incident on a ropes course at the SAFRA Yishun recreation facility.
