Risk Management for Outdoor Programs teaches you how to build a world-class safety system for your outdoor, adventure or experiential program.

You’ll learn the science behind why accidents occur. You’ll learn the best practices and industry standards for outdoor safety. And you’ll use this knowledge to develop a strategic plan for improving the safety systems at your organization.

The course is online, and takes 40 hours, spread over 4 weeks.

You’ll take part in five video-conference calls, generally 90 minutes long, one week apart, with seminar-style discussions and presentations by course participants.

In between are independent work periods. You’ll engage in interactive safety simulations, online discussion forums, video-based lecture presentations, readings, case studies, role-plays, quizzes, and small group projects.

You’ll evaluate your own organization against best practice safety standards, conduct a mock incident review of an outdoor adventure program, and outline a written risk management plan customized for your organization.

The course is useful for outdoor program managers and leaders world-wide.

It’s the most comprehensive and in-depth outdoor risk management training available anywhere.

You’ll use the textbook Risk Management for Outdoor Programs: A Guide to Safety in Outdoor Education, Recreation and Adventure, two hundred and eighteen pages of expert guidance and essential information.

Graduates earn a certificate from Viristar good for three years.

Participants from dozens of countries around the world have benefited from the training.
