Viristar Director Interviewed by European Centre of Adventure Training

Viristar’s director, Jeff Beierlein, was recently interviewed by leaders from the European Centre of Adventure Training to discuss safety in the global adventure sector.

The interview was conducted by Jacqui Coward, Co-Founder and Head of Leadership and Program Development, and Thomas Exner, Co-Founder and Head of Mountain Programs. ECAT provides professional training programs for adventure guides and outdoor leaders.

The conversation explored the importance of safety systems and training in the adventure sector. Jeff described how organizations can support good safety outcomes through leadership, systematic risk assessment and clear standard operating procedures. He noted that while major incidents in adventure activities are relatively rare, they can have far-reaching impacts on participants, families, responders and the broader adventure sector.

Jeff also discussed the concept of safety culture—how the beliefs and values within an organization influence safety-related behavior. Organizations that prioritize safety invest in staff training, maintain appropriate equipment, develop clear procedures, and regularly practice emergency response scenarios.

The interview also addressed global perspectives on adventure safety. Through Viristar’s work with outdoor, travel and adventure professionals in more than 85 countries, Jeff noted that expectations around safety vary by region due to differences in resources, regulation and cultural context. However, awareness of the value of strong safety practices is growing worldwide as regions recognize the benefits of high-quality adventure programs for personal development, health and well-being, and sustainable economic development.

The discussion highlighted the important role of organizations like ECAT in preparing the next generation of adventure professionals. Through comprehensive training programs, ECAT helps develop knowledge and skills that support effective outdoor leadership.

Viristar is pleased to support ECAT’s work, and Jeff serves as an advisor to the organization. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the quality and safety of the global adventure sector.
