Presentation
What is Diversity, Equity and Inclusion? Why do they matter? How do they apply to the worlds of outdoor education, experiential education, adventure education? And why is DEI so hard to achieve?
This plenary address at the Outward Bound Asia Instructor Symposium poses these questions, and invites participants to explore the complexity of these issues. The presentation offers a brief outline of DEI terminology, history, and challenges. It then pivots to investigating best practices for bringing DEI alive in outdoor education programs in the USA. Finally, the presenter invites participants to consider how issues of DEI might be addressed in their own cultural, geographical and professional contexts.
Topics include privilege and unearned privilege, implicit bias, affinity bias, LGBTQ considerations, and more, applied to the wilderness and outdoor context.
This presentation is provided for attendees of the Outward Bound Asia Instructor Symposium at Outward Bound Vietnam.
